Blessed be the name of God from age to age, for wisdom and power are his.
Daniel 2:20
Pastor John Writes:
The watchword for Friedland for 2026 comes from Daniel 2:20. Before this verse, Daniel and his friends have prayed that God would give them the understanding to reveal and interpret the dream of King Nebuchadnezzar. God hears their request and gives Daniel the wisdom and understanding to reveal this dream and interpret it for the king.
In response, Daniel did not boast that he, alone, had received this revelation from God. Instead of celebrating his own role, Daniel immediately turns to worship. His words remind us where true wisdom and power are found. The knowledge given to Daniel was knowledge that no human wisdom could reveal, and he gives thanks and praise to God for supplying his need.
The simple truth of our watchword is this: God is not limited by time, circumstance, or human ability. God’s wisdom is eternal, and God’s power is beyond our understanding. In a world that often celebrates knowledge, influence, and control, Daniel’s praise focuses our attention on the One who is the source of it all.
For our church today, and this year, these words are both a comfort and a challenge. It comforts us because we do not have to carry the weight of the world on our shoulders. God is faithful throughout history, throughout the world, and even the unknown parts of our future. When life feels confusing or overwhelming, we can trust that God sees the full picture.
At the same time, this verse challenges us to respond to God’s faithfulness with gratitude and humility. Like Daniel, we are invited to give thanks and praise to God — not only in times of celebration, but in every season. Daniel reminds us that our confidence is not in our own understanding, but in God’s enduring wisdom and strength.
As we move forward together as a church, may Daniel’s words shape our hearts and our prayers. Let us bless the name of God forever and ever, trusting God fully, and giving God glory in all things.
In Christ,
The Rev. John G. Rights
