“Be faithful until death, and I will give you the crown of life.”
Revelation 2:10
Pastor John Writes:
As we approach July 6, the day commemorated as the martyrdom of John Hus in 1415, it is important for us as Moravians to reflect on his legacy — not only in the foundations of our denomination, but in all of church history.
As a Czech priest and reformer, John Hus was deeply committed to the truth of scripture. Hus called for reform within the Church — urging the clergy to return to Christ’s example, promoting the authority of scripture over human traditions, and preaching in the language of the people. His courage to speak out, even in the face of death, had a lasting impact.
Before Hus was condemned and burned at the stake for his teachings, he cited Revelation 2:10, “Be faithful until death, and I will give you the crown of life.” This verse summarized his steadfast commitment to faithfulness, even to the point of death. Fortunately, many of his followers, known as the Unitas Fratrum, or Unity of the Brethren, eventually formed the community that would become the Moravian Church.
As the Moravian Church today, we inherit this significant and faithful legacy. Hus was passionate for Christ and unshakable in his convictions. His courage continues to inspire us to live lives rooted in truth, marked by love, and shaped by the gospel of Jesus Christ.
This July, let us give thanks for John Hus — not just as a martyr of the past, but as a living witness, whose faith still calls us to walk more closely with our Savior. May we, like Hus, be found faithful.
Peace to you,
The Rev. John G. Rights
